Denon America, Inc. (Nippon Columbia Co. Ltd.)
Denon has been in the
cassette market for years. Their line was sold in more of your upper quality music
and audio stores. Right up until their production stopped, they stayed very
high-end. Their entry-level cassette in the High Bias range, the HD6, was labeled
by many as high-end. That gives you an idea of the type of quality you were dealing
with. There was also S-Port, a High Bias and Metal Bias cassette that was along the
lines of an "affordable CD cassette." I never had the chance to try it
yet. I do believe there was other Normal Bias models that came out in prior
years such as the DX7.
Denon never really concentrated on the Normal
Bias scene, basically the higher quality was in
High Bias cassettes. The HD8 outsold the HD-M for
a long time. HD-M's were not highly available, so
that's why the HD8 had such a success. I happen
to like the HD-M's sound range. Probabaly one of
the great true Metal cassettes of
all-time. Their flagship of Metal was a
Metal tape known to many as the MG-X. As far as I
know, it was available in 100 minutes, but I think
it also came in 90 minutes as well.
All
great things have to come to an end sooner or
later. Denon does not produce cassettes anymore,
not even DATs from what I gather, which was a
market they tapped into during the height of
Digital Audio Tapes. Denon discontinued their
line around 1996 or 1997, I'm not sure. If you
have any other info to add about Denon, PLEASE
E-mail me! I want to compile infomation and
create a Denon page. Thank you.

Denon's cassettes
pretty much had the same look, but just different colors. On these pages, we have the continuous
changes Denon went through with their discontinued line. Brief histories are on each cassette.
Here
below tapes are listed by Bias. Each page lists each
cassette in that Bias plus most will have a summary about
it. Some of the cassettes have their own page on The BTG. Also, there is a listing of their most popular cassettes and how they rank with The BTG. They will be up there until I can get a page set up for those ratings.
